Peanut Butter People Puppy Chow Recipe (Muddy Buddies)

If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for easy snacks and this homemade peanut butter Puppy Chow has become one of my absolute favorites. It’s one of those nostalgic treats that instantly takes me back to childhood, but it’s just as perfect for grown-up gatherings, holiday parties, or a cozy night in. The best part? This recipe is no-bake, comes together in minutes, and only needs a few simple ingredients: rice cereal, chocolate chips, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. That’s it!

This recipe for puppy chow is quick to prepare, freezer-friendly, and you can make all kinds of variations depending on the extra ingredients you use. Make a double batch of puppy chow snack mix and freeze it to have extra on hand.

What I love most about this Puppy Chow recipe is how versatile it is. I’ve made it with mini marshmallows, crushed pretzels, and even holiday sprinkles to give it a seasonal twist. It’s also super easy to make allergy-friendly by using nut-free or dairy-free substitutes. I always recommend making a double batch because, trust me, it disappears fast. Whether you’re prepping for a birthday party, packing lunchbox surprises, or just craving something sweet and crunchy, this snack mix hits the spot every single time.

Ingredients:

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup creamy or chunky peanut butter

6 cups rice Chex cereal

1-1/2 cups powdered sugar

Optional Variations:

Peanut Butter Candy: Add some Reese’s peanut butter candies to the mix

Nut-Free Option: Use almond or sunflower seed butter in place of peanut butter.

Extra Chocolatey: For a deeper chocolate taste, mix 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder with the powdered sugar.

Instructions:

Melt the peanut butter and chocolate chips together in a double boiler or in a bowl that is safe to use in the microwave. Stirring occasionally, heat the mixture for 30 seconds at a time until it becomes glossy and smooth.

Fill a large mixing bowl with half of the cereal. Cover the cereal with half of the melted chocolate-peanut butter mixture. Gently swirl to evenly coat all of the cereal pieces after adding the remaining cereal and melted mixture.

Let the covered cereal cool until it reaches room temperature. The powdered sugar will adhere correctly and not melt if this step is followed.

Put the powdered sugar and any optional ingredients in a different bowl. Sprinkle this mixture on top of the chilled cereal gradually, tossing to coat. The grain and sugar mixture can be put in a big resealable bag and shaken until evenly coated for a uniform coating.

Transfer the coated cereal to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. To set the coating, let it remain at room temperature or in the refrigerator for approximately half an hour.

Storage:

Puppy Chow can keep for up to a week in an airtight container and stores nicely in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Store in the freezer for up to two months in a sealed container for extended storage. Before serving, let it thaw at room temperature.

Serving Suggestions:

This snack mix is a great treat at any time of year, but it is especially great for parties and holiday get-togethers. To fit the occasion, personalize it with your preferred additions, such as small marshmallows, pretzel pieces, or festive sprinkles.
